Tanzania
Tanzania,
despite a wealth of natural resources, is among the world's
poorest countries, and at times its most exasperating. For
visitors it can often be expensive, hot and unsophisticated.
But there can be few countries in the world which are more
exciting!
Its scenery alone, from the high snows of Mt. Kilimanjaro
to the coral sands of Zanzibar, from the short-grass savanna
to the petrified violence of the great Rift Valley, is splendid.
And yet these landscapes are little more than stages for a
whole cast of wildlife spectaculars, including the greatest
of natural double-acts, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, scene
of the annual migration which involves more than two million
animals.
Less well-known but not less worthy are sancturies such as
Lake Manyara, famous for its flamingoes and tree-climping lions,
Gombe Stream with its chimpanzees, and those sleeping giants
of the south, Ruaha and the Selous, elephant kingdoms extraordinary.
Tanzania's people, friendly and welcoming without being servile,
range from Maasai pastoralists armed with spears to cosmopolitan
city dwellers. Their history begins with man's first footsteps,
printed in vulcanic ash millions of years ago, and exstends
to the present day through the remarkable Swahilli civilization,
the slave trade, the Zanzibar sultanate and the great age of
exploration, when men such as Livingstone and Stanley strode
the land.
For those who can rice above its various challenges, Tanzania,
the "real Africa", awaits with an extended arm and a ready
